THE HISTORY OF LEGOLAND WINDSOR RESORT

LEGOLAND Windsor, one of the UK's most popular family theme parks, has been delighting guests since 1996.

It’s situated on the former site of Windsor Safari Park which was a well-known safari attraction from 1969 to 1992.

The park was built on the grounds of a mansion located on St Leonards Hill.

After a successful run Windsor Safari Park began to experience a decline in visitor numbers, leading to its closure in January 1992.

Around the same time, the Lego Group was conducting research for the development of a second Legoland park, following the original Legoland Billund in Denmark.

They evaluated over 1000 potential sites before choosing the ideal location in Windsor.
In 1992 and 1993 extensive planning, design work, site preparation, and the creation and construction of models took place.

New homes were also secured for all the safari animals previously residing at the park.

As installations were being built, park staff were recruited. LEGOLAND Windsor officially opened its doors on March 17, 1996 and in its first season it attracted over 1.4 million guests.

In 2005 due to increasing losses the LEGO Group decided to put the LEGOLAND parks up for sale.

They were eventually acquired by the Blackstone Group, and control of the parks passed to Merlin Entertainments, with LEGO retaining a smaller share.

Initially LEGOLAND Windsor had a modest lineup of attractions offering a mix of family rides and creative experiences. However, the park has expanded steadily over the years.

Today, LEGOLAND Windsor welcomes millions of visitors annually.
