Hindu Wedding Customs & Traditions Explained
Wedding Attire
You will often see a Pakistani bride wearing a brightly coloured shalwar kameez, saris, or lehengas. Red is a favourite as it symbolises love and passion. Grooms wear white or black traditional clothing or Western suits.
Nikkah
During the Nikkah (or Nikah) the happy couple exchanges special vows and promises.The Mehr often takes place before this, and this is where the groom gives gifts and money to the bride.
Munh Dikhai
This doesn't always take place but when it does, it's part of the Nikkah. The bride and groom gaze into a mirror with a shawl covering their heads. They feed each other honey repersenting their sweet marriage ahead.
Marriage Contract
The couple signs the official marriage contract whilst in the precense of two male witnesses repeating the words “qubool hai” (I accept) three times.
Walima
The grand wedding party celebration is known as the Walima or Valima. The grooms family is typically in charge of organising this. You can often expect amazing entertainment, lots of dancing and great cuisine.
Traditional Wedding Food
The food is a big part of the day. Traditional dishes like Tikka kebab is served and usually all meat is halal.
Mehndi Ki Rasam
The brides family applies mehndi onto her hands and feeds her sweets or chocolate. A popular choice is M&Ms.
Rukhsati
As the day comes to an end the Rukhasti follows.The bride and groom bids fairwell to everyone and leaves the venue with their elders by their side.
